Facade Smart Glass — PDLC Switchable Insulated Glass Unit for Curtain Walls & Exterior Applications

Switchable Privacy Glass, Engineered for the Exterior Facade

City Star Glass introduces our Facade Smart Glass series — a PDLC switchable glass unit specifically engineered for exterior curtain walls, building facades, and window wall systems. Unlike our standard laminated smart glass (which is designed primarily for interior applications), this series is built as a true insulated glass unit (IGU) — combining the privacy-switching capability of PDLC smart film with the thermal and acoustic performance of double-glazed facade glass.

This is smart glass that can live on the outside of your building — handling temperature extremes, wind loads, UV exposure, and the structural demands of exterior glazing while switching instantly between transparent and frosted states at the touch of a button.

Why Facade Smart Glass Is Different

Our 0404 through 1212 Plus series are laminated smart glass units — ideal for interior partitions, doors, and interior feature walls. The Facade Smart Glass series is a fundamentally different construction: a true insulated glass unit with an air or argon gas cavity between two panes of glass.

The layered construction, exterior to interior:

  1. Glass pane — outer structural skin (tempered, ultra-clear, Low-E available)

  2. Insulated gas cavity — air or argon gas layer for thermal and acoustic insulation

  3. EVA interlayer film

  4. PDLC smart film — the switchable liquid crystal core

  5. EVA interlayer film

  6. Glass pane — inner structural skin

This is the standard construction method for architectural curtain wall glazing — with the added benefit of PDLC switchability laminated into one of the glass plies.

The result: A single facade panel that provides:

  • Superior thermal insulation — the insulated gas cavity reduces heat transfer, lowering HVAC energy costs

  • Enhanced sound reduction — double glazing with a gas cavity dramatically reduces external noise

  • Switchable privacy and solar control — switch between clear (max daylight and views) and frosted (solar shading, glare control, privacy) on demand

  • Full UV protection — ≥99% UV block protects interior furnishings, artwork, and occupants

Three Transmittance Grades

The Facade Smart Glass series is available in three PDLC film options:

085 PDLC Film

  • Light transmittance (on): 72%

  • Light transmittance (off): 60%

  • Haze (on): 6%

  • Haze (off): 94%

A practical grade for exterior facades where a balance of light transmission and solar control is desired.

087 PDLC Film

  • Light transmittance (on): 75%

  • Light transmittance (off): 63%

  • Haze (on): 4%

  • Haze (off): 94%

Our most popular facade grade — clear enough for comfortable daylight, private enough for glare and solar control.

091 PDLC Film

  • Light transmittance (on): 77%

  • Light transmittance (off): 65%

  • Haze (on): 3%

  • Haze (off): 94%

The premium ultra-clear option for high-end facades and luxury buildings where maximum optical clarity is essential.

Note: Transmittance values are slightly lower than our interior laminated series due to the additional glass ply and insulated gas cavity inherent in IGU construction.

Built for Exterior Conditions

Facade Smart Glass is engineered to meet the unique challenges of exterior glazing:

Thermal PerformanceThe insulated gas cavity reduces U-value (heat transfer) significantly compared to monolithic or single-laminated glass. Combined with the PDLC film's ≥60% infrared blocking rate, the facade smart glass helps reduce solar heat gain in summer and heat loss in winter — lowering building energy consumption and HVAC costs.

Acoustic PerformanceDouble glazing with an insulated gas cavity provides substantially better sound insulation than single laminated glass — critical for buildings in dense urban environments, near airports, or adjacent to major roadways. The PDLC film itself also contributes to sound dampening.

Weather ResistanceTested to operate reliably across a temperature range of -30°C to 85°C, Facade Smart Glass performs in everything from Nordic winters to Middle Eastern summers. The sealed IGU construction protects the PDLC film from moisture, humidity, and temperature cycling — ensuring long-term exterior durability.

SafetyBoth glass plies can be specified as tempered safety glass, meeting building code requirements for exterior glazing. The laminated construction ensures that if glass breaks, it adheres to the interlayer rather than shattering into dangerous shards.

Applications

Commercial Curtain WallsIntegrate switchable smart glass sections into building facades. Conference rooms on upper floors can switch to frosted during meetings — no blinds, no external shading devices, no visual clutter on the building exterior.

High-Rise Windows & Window WallsFloor-to-ceiling windows in offices, hotels, and luxury residences. Switch to clear for panoramic views and natural daylight. Switch to frosted for glare control, solar shading, and privacy — all without external blinds or internal curtains.

Entrance Canopies & LobbiesGrand entrance facades and double-height lobby glazing that transforms from a clear, welcoming glass wall to a frosted privacy screen or projection display as needed.

Skylights & Atrium GlazingOverhead glass skylights and atrium roofs with switchable solar control. Switch to frosted on bright, sunny days to diffuse harsh daylight and reduce glare below — then switch back to clear on overcast days to maximize natural light.

Retail StorefrontsExterior shopfront glass that is transparent during business hours to attract customers, then switches to frosted projection mode after closing to display dynamic advertising, brand videos, and digital content.

Museums & GalleriesExterior glazing that protects sensitive artworks from UV damage (≥99% UV block) while allowing natural light in — with the ability to switch to frosted on days of intense direct sunlight to prevent artwork fading.

Rear Projection on the Facade

When the facade glass is in its opaque (frosted) state, the interior surface functions as a rear projection screen. Project content onto the glass from inside the building — creating a dynamic exterior display visible to the street or plaza outside.

This transforms the building facade from a static architectural element into a dynamic communication surface: brand messaging at dusk, event announcements, artistic projections, or immersive video content — all controlled remotely and scheduled via software.

Low-E & Energy-Efficient Options

For energy-conscious projects, Facade Smart Glass can be specified with Low-E (low-emissivity) glass on the outer pane. Low-E coating reflects infrared heat while allowing visible light to pass through — further improving the thermal performance of the insulated unit and contributing to green building certification targets (LEED, BREEAM, etc.).

The combination of switchable PDLC privacy + insulated gas cavity + Low-E coating creates a high-performance facade glazing unit that adapts to changing solar conditions throughout the day — automatically or via central building management.
